Greek Culture and Plantation Shutters

Jan 06, 2020

I read an interesting story not too long ago. One thing I like about stories is that they create imagination and you imagine different scenes as you read. It’s just like watching a movie. You read the words and the scenes are created in your mind automatically. So, when I read this story about a student, I found it really amusing and interesting.

It was about a task that he was assigned by his professor and he thought he would never be able to complete it, resulting in a really bad grade. So, he was a little sad as he wanted to pass the class and win a good grade.

What happened was that his history professor told him to talk about a piece of Greek culture that was already present in his house. Now, the student scratched his head and wondered where that piece came from because his parents were not Greek.

So, after the class, he went to his professor and told him that he was not Greek. The professor smiled and replied that he knew he was not Greek. Now, the student was startled to hear that, because if the professor knew, why did he assign such a task. So, he shared his concern with the professor and the reply he got was that if he couldn’t find it, his grade would be affected.

The situation was getting very frustrated for the student. Professor realized that and told him to look at the window. The student did and said that it’s a normal window and that he had the same type of window at home as well. His professor smiled again and said that the answer was already there and if he found it, he would get a good grade, otherwise he’d feel really sad as the grade would get negatively affected. So, with his head down in sadness, the student went home, hoping that he would discover the answer.

As soon as he reached home, he went straight to the window. He looked outside along with looking at the window, but there was no answer. His father then entered the room and noticed that his son was sad and was staring at the window. So, his father asked what happened. He told the whole story and his father started laughing.

His father then said that he was actually looking at Greek culture, i.e. Plantation Shutters.

His father told him that plantation shutters were created in Greece back in the fifteen century. With time they evolved and now we have them in wooden form.

The student returned to school the next morning happily as he knew he had secured a good grade and learned something new about Greek culture.
